Iqaluit, (Nunavut), May 13, 2010 – Youth in Canada’s North will have the opportunity to develop new skills while they attend the G8 Summit for Youth in Ottawa. The program is made possible thanks to an investment by the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.
The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) announced today that CanNor will invest more than $165,000 over two years to Global Vision, a registered national not-for-profit organization, for the Junior Team Canada Pan-Territorial Northern Project.
This project involves youth from across Canada’s three territories that will have the opportunity to meet with industry and governmental leaders and attend forums on G8 issues. The youth will also meet peers and business leaders from across Canada and around the world, and develop their knowledge of economic issues in Northern Canada.
"In February of this year, the government brought G7 Finance Ministers to Iqaluit to experience Canada's Arctic and learn about the North. With this initiative, now youth from Canada's North will travel to Ottawa to share their perspectives and learn more about how the North fits within the Canadian and global economies,” said Minister Strahl.
“This program will benefit youth across Canada, and specifically youth from Northern Canada,” said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister responsible for the North and Minister of Health. “Participants will build skills, knowledge and experience to help them succeed as tomorrow’s global leaders.”
“Global Vision is very excited to be able to offer the opportunity for young leaders of the North to become engaged as Youth Ambassadors and represent the Territories on an international level at the upcoming G8/G20 Youth Summit”, said Amy Giroux, spokesperson for Global Vision.
Global Vision, founded in 1991, is registered as a national not-for-profit organization that partners with government, business and education leaders to train and educate Canada’s young leaders to become active global citizens in today’s global economy.
This investment is made possible through the Targeted Investment Program, delivered through CanNor’s Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in the three territories.
SINED is one of several of economic development programs within CanNor, which is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada’s economic development activities in the territories, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
