These projects, funded through CanNor’s Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development’s (SINED) program, will attract and support investment and business development in Yukon, showcase and promote its art and culture and the territory as a tourist destination, and support the role First Nations play in the economic development of the territory.
CanNor funding: $715,800
The Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) will receive funding from two programs under SINED, $526,882 from the Targeted Investment Program and $188,918 through the Innovation and Knowledge Fund. In partnership with the Four Host First Nation Society and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Yukon First Nations 2010 project management team will work with Yukon First Nation communities and businesses to deliver a multi-facetted view of Yukon Aboriginal commercial success and cultural flare.
The Yukon First Nations 2010 project includes a business showcase for tourism, mining and cultural industries. A main stage multidisciplinary show will include live story telling and dance performances, video and still imagery. The business showcase will highlight investment ready industries and market the Yukon as a great travel destination through a Yukon First Nations 2010 destination web page (Yukon First Nations 2010).
The project will provide capacity and product development, and marketing assistance to ensure that all participants are prepared to maximize the opportunities available at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Working for the CYFN, the project management team will develop, manage and deliver the programming and operational elements for Yukon First Nation participation at the 2010 Aboriginal Pavilion and other 2010 related events.
CanNor funding: $245,000
The Yukon government received CanNor funding for their Path to Investment in Tourism project. The Yukon government’s Tourism and Culture Department, Air North, Canadian North Airlines, and Northwest Territories Tourism Department contributed another $142,000 to this project. This funding supports many tools that will enhance the Yukon’s tourism marketing efforts. These include:

Northern Cultural Expressions Society is a non-profit society that works closely with Sundog Carving Studio. Funding is to help plan the creation of a venue to showcase and promote Yukon artists’ work. This will bring sustainable employment and economic benefits to Yukon First Nations Artists, youth, and the broader Yukon community.
